In research of my 12 years I found that there is no difference in the manufacturing of memory foam mattresses, all are same. Honestly speaking, I would say that all manufacturers like Silentnight mattresses and Sealy mattresses etc pretend about their manufacturing process. There are no industry standards upon which you may judge these mattresses. But here, I have suggested some points upon which you may evaluate the difference between the traditional and current mattresses. Have a look!

  1. These mattresses are often called eco-friendly- environment friendly or earth friendly. But in reality, they are made up from highly intensive chemicals. People call today’s mattresses as 2nd generation Visco elastic but they are not as tree huggers as stated. But we can surely say that today’s mattresses are much more superior to their predecessors. The technological advancements are still moving forward.
  2. The traditional oil used to manufacture these mattresses has been replaced by the plant based oils. These natural oils like corn, sunflower or soybean contains 30% weight age in the total quantity of oil being used in manufacturing. Due to these natural oils, our dependency upon the imported oil has been lessened.
  3. Some of the brands, now days, uses 0 emission process and open cell structure in manufacturing; due to which they produce less gasses as compared to others.
  4. In older mattresses, another problem was about heat. Those mattresses got firmer in cooler environments and softer in hotter environments. This problem was addressed and has been eliminated now. Now these mattresses have a better support and they do not change their firmness within 60 to 90 degrees. These mattresses are not heat sensitive and do not change with changing temperature.
  5. Now the memory foam mattresses are having a unique sort of open cell structure. They absorb and dissipate heat through the proper air flow. They let the air circulate through it 10 times faster than the 1st generation mattresses. The result is that these mattresses are not smelly and have a stable temperature. They get the heat of body and release it when the person moves away.
  6. Recycling is the best recommended way of disposing items. Luckily, most of the memory foam mattresses are manufactured from recycled foam which is the best part. Its foam padding is again recycle-able as carpets and other rugs. When you use these mattresses you cannot feel that you are using a pre consumer good.
  7. Another difference is that now these mattresses can be easily shipped through UPS that run overall the world virtually. This saves the footprints and vehicle expense of the supplier or the manufacturer in delivery process.
  8. These mattresses now have permanent covering made up of bamboo which is an easily producible resource. They do not have the typical zipped coverings now.
  9. Now these mattresses are more flexible than the older ones. You may easily bend them while shipping and shifting. It will not break or tear from the bending area.
  10. The box springs of the mattresses are also more flexible than the older ones.

These are some of the most common differences among the old and new ones. Now doubt the 2nd generation mattresses are better than the 1st generation due to technological advancements.
